Bitcoins worth INR 500 crores demanded as ransom from Wipro

Wipro has filed a complaint with the Bengaluru police after the IT major received an email from an anonymous user on Friday 5 May.

The e-mail which was sent by the address [email protected] threatened Wipro that it would attack Wipro’s office if they did not paid Rs 500 crores in Bitcoin. The email also mentioned a specific portal where the Bitcoins needed to be transferred. It was asked to be deposited in 29 days from the day the email was sent.

The email sender had threatened to use Ricin, a susbtance which is known to have fatal error facts if ingested, inhaled or injected. The sender mentioned that  he has stored isolated 1 kg of high-quality Ricin and would be sending 2 grams in envelopes to one of Wipro’s offices in the city in the coming days to prove that he is not faking.

The attacker also mentioned in the email that he would use Ricin in the food served at the company’s cafeteria, and will desperse it using a flying drone.

This is not the first time that a controversy comes in India involving Bitcoins.

Another controversy involving Bitcoins came in where a group of four people hacked the UPI app of Bank of Maharsahta, withdrew almost Rs 6.14 crores ( $1 million) and invested it in Bitcoin through Zebpay. Police then fronzed Zebpay’s bank account. Zebpay is one the leading Bitcoin exchange.

Bitcoin being decentralized and anonymous could be a revolution in currency sector but still can be harmful to the economy if not regularized. With rising Bitcoin controversies, government has set up a committee to study and examine virtual currencies like Bitcoin.
