Footwear giant, Nike files for a trademark application for the phrase “Cryptokicks,” with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on April 19.

The application describes the offerings as crypto wallets and “downloadable mobile applications for providing access to crypto collectibles, crypto art, and application tokens”, along with operating an online marketplace that will feature footwear and clothing.

The document sets a plan for “providing a digital currency or digital token for use by members of an online community,” and to allow transactions to be completed employing “unconventional currency systems.”

Nike also elaborates in the document, that it wants to reserve the Cryptokicks name for providing “online blogs in the field of crypto collectibles” and to offer computer games in the likes of scavenger hunts, treasure hunts, and obstacle courses.

A trademark attorney in the U.S. who analyzed the filing, Josh Gerben stated in a Tweet:

“This appears to be a filing for a brand of a cryptocurrency … this is trademark speak for ‘this is a cryptocurrency called Cryptokicks.”

Gerben elaborated that the application was made on a “1B” basis, i.e. Nike has submitted a sworn statement indicating towards their intention to employ the trademark in the near future. The filling means that the public or Nike’s business rivals have 30 days to mount an objection.

Reportedly, Nike has been pushing its mobile app and social media strategy aggressively, subsequently, the brand’s website claims that its digital commerce business is now worth $2 billion.
