2017 has been a phenomenal year for Bitcoin with its price reaching record heights. Thus, it is only obvious for common people to seek out the help of world wide web to enlighten their mind and broaden their knowledge base regarding this dynamic new form of digital currency. The annual report published by Wikipedia containing a list of the 50 most widely visited web pages has imparted the ninth raking to bitcoin. The report which described bitcoin as “the much-hyped ‘future of money’” added that the very first cryptocurrency of this world “has turned into the most speculative intangible asset of all time.”
According to the report, the page was visited for 15,026,561 times in 2017. Bitcoin’s Wikipedia page underwent a massive surge in traffic on 8th December coinciding with the fall in Bitcoin’s value by 20% since its all-time high of $17,171 USD on Bitfinex. In spite of becoming one of the most sought after objects of 2017, Bitcoin “prov[ed] totally unsuitable as a means of payment” as recognized in the Wikipedia report because of its surrounding controversies which have accompanied BTC since the very onset of the fiscal.
A dramatic growth has also been seen in the Google searches conducted using keywords related to crypto world. Data extracted from Google Trends have revealed that certain keywords have undergone searches ranging from one to ten million figures during the last fiscal. The data has revealed that searches made by typing in the keyword ‘bitcoin price’ underwent 1,000% hike over the last twelve months when compared with the data of 2016. Searches proceeded with using the keyword ‘bitcoin chart’ underwent a 934% hike while those pertaining to ‘bitcoin USD’ rose up by 800%. As per Google estimates, all the aforementioned keyword groupings received search hits between 1 and 10 million on a monthly basis in 2017 which came in as a significant improvement over 2016 figures.

Dominant keyword groupings related to bitcoin ranging between 100,000 and 1,000,000 monthly searches were received last year. ‘Current bitcoin’ underwent the highest growth in comparison to 2016 figures by depicting a 895.9% increase in search frequencies. ‘Sell bitcoins’ increased by 626.5%, ‘btc price’ gained volume by 626.5%, ‘btc rate’ was up by 510.4%, ‘bitcoin miner’ by 590.6%, ‘btc rate’ by 510.4%, ‘bitcoin calculator’ by 471.2%, ‘bitcoin rate’ by 461.4%, ‘buy bitcoin’ by 273.5%, ‘bitcoin trading’ by 170.9% and ‘earn bitcoin’ searches increased by 74.6%.
Various notable keywords also reported exponential searches which helped them in achieving between 10,000 and 100,000 more hits. ‘Bitcoin market’ – reported a 900% increase, searches for ‘btc chart’ was up by 826.2%, ‘currency bitcoin’ increased by 826.1%, ‘purchase bitcoin’ accentuated by 752.5%, and ‘bitcoin account’ – showcased a 291.2% hike. The story was completely different for the three keywords ‘bitcoin mining’, bitcoin exchange’ and ‘bitcoin wallet’ which showcased the least growth statistics of 33.6%, 17.5% and 0.9% respectively.
