BitMEX Donates $2.5 Million to COVID-19 Efforts

Blockchain

Several cryptocurrency firms have announced different efforts to help the ongoing coronavirus pandemic currently ravaging the world. As these firms increase in number, crypto derivatives exchange platform BitMEX has announced its plans to do its bit in tackling the problem.

In a recent announcement, HDR Global Trading Limited, BitMEX’s operator, has said it is joining the COVID-19 fight. The company says it has created a fund to the effect, worth $2.5 million.

Per the announcement, HDR Global says that philanthropy is a great way to help, as it can “fill gaps” that may be left open by other efforts being channeled all over the world. To help, HDR Global says it will split the $2.5 million into four portions of between $300,000 and $1,000,000, to four organizations. The organizations include Gates Philanthropy Partners, OpenMined, the Nuclear Threat Initiative’s Biosecurity Program, and Our World in Data.

Speaking on the move, HDR Global CEO and Co-founder Arthur Hayes, says the company wants to do as much as it can, as the world fights the pandemic.

“We are committed to thoughtful grantmaking and ensuring that our actions during the COVID-19 crisis can make the biggest impact now and in the future.”

In March, BitMEX announced it refunded over 40 BTC to users that were affected by a DDoS attack on its platform.
