BMW, GM, Ford and Renault Headed For a Blockchain Coalition

Deluxe Automobile Brands, BMW, Ford, General Motors (GM), and Renault are now a part of the Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative (MOBI), a new group that aims to leverage blockchain technology for cars. The coalition was announced on Tuesday this week.

The use cases will range from autonomous payments to supply chain. MOBI, which was launched on Wednesday, currently includes about 30 companies which also includes the car-parts manufacturers Bosch and ZF as well as major companies (Accenture, IBM) and blockchain industry groups (Consensys, Hyperledger).

MOBI said its scope of focus varies from payments, data tracking, and supply management, to consumer finance and pricing, and more futuristic areas like autonomous vehicles and ride-sharing systems.

Chris Ballinger, who is MOBI’s first chairman and CEO said in a statement,

“Blockchain and related trust enhancing technologies are poised to redefine the automotive industry and how consumers purchase, insure and use vehicles,”

Former CFO and director of mobility services at the Toyota Research Institute said,

“By bringing together automakers, suppliers, startups, and government agencies, we can accelerate adoption for the benefit of businesses, consumers and communities,”
