Coinbase Website Crashes from Influx of Traffic After Super Bowl Ad Debut

Coinbase

Coinbase’s website crashed following traffic stemming from its ad at the recently concluded Super Bowl 56 event. The prominent American crypto exchange platform saw its promotional page, website, and app go dark momentarily. However, all systems are now back to normal.

Coinbase’s Super Bowl ad was one of a few high-profile crypto-centric commercials that aired during the sporting event on Sunday. The crypto exchange was making its debut at the event with the ad, which reportedly cost it $14 million. The TV spot featured a floating QR code box that bounced around the screen for a minute. Directing viewers to a promotional page on the Coinbase website, the platform offered new user signups $15 in Bitcoin (BTC). Coinbase’s ad borrowed concept elements evocative of the early computer or console games from the 1970s and ‘80s.

Shortly after Coinbase’s TV spot went live to the hundreds of millions of viewers at home in the US, issues began to emanate on social media. There were reports among a growing number of Twitter users about issues concerning connection to the Coinbase website and app. The issue was a callback to the crypto exchange’s inability to handle large site traffic in the past, most notably last year and in 2020 too.

After a few minutes, the Coinbase issue was resolved and users regained access to the site.
