Coronavirus: CME Group To Close Chicago Trading Floor After Hours on Friday

Blockchain

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) Group has announced that it will close its Chicago trading floor on Friday. According to an official press release, the closure will begin at the end of the normal trading day, on Friday, March 13.

The announcement specifies that closure is a precaution. The CME Group says that it is simply following medical advice from health experts that have highlighted the high risk of coronavirus infections in places where a large number of people are gathered. It will close the trading floor even though there are no reported cases within the building.

“No coronavirus cases have been reported on the trading floor or in the Chicago Board of Trade building. The reopening of the trading floor will be evaluated as more medical guidance on the coronavirus becomes available.”

The CME Group also says that the closure will not affect trades and that the company’s headquarters will not be closed.

For floor traders, the CME has said that they will receive “an additional q&a” by tomorrow, about how to run “certain floor products, procedures, and protocols.”

Earlier this month, CME trading volumes significantly plunged to $118 million, its lowest point since December 31. This followed a worldwide market crash on fears related to the coronavirus outbreak.
