Crypto.com Sold to Monaco (MCO) For Millions

After being approached by multiple entities and being offered plenty of money, Matt Blaze refused to sell his website, Crypto.com. It looks like his tune has finally changed over the course of a year, as it is being reported that the website has now been sold to Monaco.

TechCrunch reported that Monaco purchased the domain for an undisclosed amount. Monaco is known for its cryptocurrency token MCO and a Visa debit card backed by cryptocurrency; after the domain sale, the company is rebranding itself as “Crypto.com.”

Blaze, a well-known professor of computer and information technology sciences at the University of Pennsylvania bought the domain in 1993. At the time he registered the domain due to its relation to his interest in cryptography, hence his position as a director of the Tor Project.

So why did Blaze sell the domain to Monaco? Monaco CEO Kris Marszalek simply told TechCrunch that “if it was only about money he’d have sold it a long time ago.” Granted, we don’t know how much money was involved here. Domain sellers told earlier this year that the domain might be worth between $5 and $10 million — one called it “unbelievable.” Other cryptocurrency-related domains have changed hands for lower, but still extremely large, amounts of money: Eth.com, for instance, sold for $2 million.

Marszalek, says:

“Crypto.com gives us a powerful new identity in line with our original vision to put cryptocurrency in every wallet. As the name we are taking on is also representative of the entire space, it comes with a huge responsibility to carry the torch.”

While Blaze might have finally sold Crypto.com, however, his personal site still warns visitors against investing in cryptocurrency. “Many cryptocurrencies are scams, and I strongly advise against their use as investment vehicles,”
