According to a  Foundation Medium post, the Ethereum Foundation has donated 15,000 Ethereum Classic (ETC) tokens amounting to around $134,000 (at the time of writing), to the Ethereum Classic Cooperative as they came across the wads in  “old Foundation wallets.”

Quite similar in their approaches, the Ethereum Foundation, and Ethereum Classic Cooperative are semi-autonomous support vehicles for their respective chains, to provide financial backing and fostering community engagement and growth. For instance, the Devcon4 conference organized by Ethereum Foundation in Prague.

Some shared technical challenges faced by these communities have pushed them to be civil with each other. It seems the donation is sort of a peace offering for the  “thawing tensions” as suggested by Foundation’s Virgil Griffith. The two chains have had famously split more than two years ago amid the controversy of the DAO refund.

The lead developer at ETCDEV, Igor Artamonov immediately clarified the nature of the donation on his twitter account. He stated ETCDEV is independent of both the ETC network and the Cooperative. ETCDEV is under no obligation to collaborate with either the Foundation or the Cooperative as a result of the disbursement.
