Ethereum Starts Testing Code for Hard Fork ‘Constantinople’

Constantinople | Ethereum hard fork | Hard fork updates | ethereum blockchain

The implementation and testing of the code for the next major upgrade of the Ethereum network called Constantinople has already begun. A corresponding statement was made at a meeting of key network developers on Friday, July 27.

Constantinople will be the second stage of the Metropolis hail, and is expected to increase efficiency and reduce transaction fees on the Ethereum network. Also today it was confirmed that its activation will take place before the Devcon4 conference, which will be held from October 30 to November 2 in Prague, although the exact number of the block of hardcore has not yet been confirmed.

In addition, an approximate roadmap for this back incompatible upgrade was proposed, according to which the implementation of the code will last until August 13, after which two months will be allocated for testing. In particular, a test network focused specifically on Constantinople will be launched.

According to the announcement made at today’s meeting, currently the developers are engaged in the implementation of four proposals for the improvement of Ethereum (EIP). The main developer of the most popular Ethereum-client Geth Peter Siladie said that most of the changes have already been implemented.

“EIP is mostly ready,” he said.

EIP 210 will allow to change the principle of storing block hashes in the Ethereum network. The EIP 145 is another important modification to Ethereum that wants to increase the speed of arithmetic in the so called Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). The EIP 1014 and the EIP 1052 are also being developed by the community. The last two EIP try to add ethereum state channels and create a newop-code that compresses how contracts interact.

One of the most interesting issues related to the change in the complexity of mining, is still open. Moderator Hudson Jameson said,

“We will not be able to take a decision on this issue today,”
