German Authorities Confiscate Over $30 Million In Crypto From Defunct Streaming Site

Cryptocurrencies

Operators of streaming site movie2k.to have had their crypto assets confiscated. The confiscation was possible through the combined effort of the German police, Dresden General Prosecutor’s Office and the Federal Bureau Of Investigation (FBI).

The website’s two operators were accused of distributing pirated films from the website and running an illegal streaming service for five years. Both operators, a real estate entrepreneur and a programmer, have been in custody since November 2019. Authorities seized more than $30 million worth of cryptocurrency.

The entrepreneur was accused of money laundering while the programmer was accused of using revenue from the illegal website to buy Bitcoin which was later used to acquire real estate properties. A total amount of £25 Million Euro in crypto assets was released by the programmer to the German Authorities as damage reparation. He recently admitted to his part in the scheme, and is cooperating with the German Authorities to build a case against his partner. .

Anti piracy laws are still strictly upheld by the German government. Perpetrators could receive sentences up to 3 years in prison for accessing pirated materials. Enforcing this law has reduced the rate of pirates on the German internet to less than 2%. Germany is known in Europe for its strict enforcement of antipiracy laws and prosecution of those who break the law.
