Yesterday, IBM announced a set of investments and initiatives in France that will create 1,800 jobs during the next two years, in leading-edge areas like AI, blockchain, cloud computing and IoT. This was coupled with a major expansion in France of the world’s largest network of training programs for “new collar” skills.

IBM plans to hire business consultants, IT architects, developers and technical experts, including both new graduates and experienced professionals.

IBM CEO Virginia Rometty told Le Monde that she, and by extension IBM, is in line with French President Emmanuel Macron’s “vision of investing in data and artificial intelligence.” To that end, IBM will also be involved, via public and private partnerships, in helping French high schools develop programs to train students in AI and blockchain, she added.

While she did not elaborate on what projects the researchers may be working on, she did note that the company currently works with Crédit Mutuel, Orange Bank, Generali, France’s national railway system and Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE (LVMH). Rometty said,

“In the next two years, we will hire 1,800 people in France at IBM. In January, we announced a project to recruit 400 people for research. These jobs will include AI, blockchain … and the Internet of Things.”

This week, IBM was earlier in the news for partnering with carbon credits startup Veridium Labs Ltd too see carbon credits issued on the Stellar XLM blockchain, streamlining the trade of carbon offset credits in an open market.
