Popular Spanish football team FC Barcelona has released a cryptocurrency token. Barca, as the club is popularly called, did this to foster a much stronger relationship with its fans in Spain and all over the world.
The football club, based in Catalonia, developed the tokens in collaboration with Chiliz, a blockchain firm. Called the Barça Fan Tokens ($BAR) the crypto will be used to foster these relationships with fans by allowing fans to participate in the club’s decisions. Fans will be able to use BAR tokens to take part in Barça’s surveys and also vote when there’s a poll. The participation will be facilitated through Socios.com, a mobile app developed by Chiliz.
Speaking on the new development, CEO and founder of Chiliz and Socios.com Alexandre Dreyfus. expressed excitement in the decision to allow fans to take part in some of the club’s processes. Dreyfus said:
“With over 300 million fans worldwide, Barça’s fandom spans countries as well as cultures. The club is without a doubt the most renowned and the most supported football club in the world and we can’t wait to see their fans start to influence club decisions.”
As a way to incentivize supporters, Chiliz will be awarding points to fans who participate via the app. These points can be used to redeem Barça merchandise and other offers.
A similar arrangement was announced by Manchester City last year.
