NASA To Leverage Ethereum Blockchain For Deep Space Research

NASA | Ethereum | Ethereum Blockchain | Blockchain Technology | Blockchain news

The concept of Blockchain Technology is going through the roof and touching the sky, which holds quite literally now. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is planning to use Ethereum’s blockchain technology to develop and enhance its own deep space exploration programs. This has to count as the most innovative technological breakthrough of the 21st century.

NASA is collaborating with the University of Akron scientists where NASA has commissioned a new research that sets into motion attempts to understand how best to incorporate Ethereum’s blockchain technology into its own programs.

In an article detailing the program’s reach, UA’s Jin Kocsis, a faculty member of the Electrical and Computer Engineering department is said to have received a total of $330,000 towards her work. According to the post, her work on “Resilient Networking and Computing Paradigm” (RNCP) will help shed light on how to make exploring space highly efficient.

Dr. Kocsis’ plan is to develop a perceptive architecture using Ethereum blockchain tech in which spacecraft won’t be as reliant on scientists back on Earth. This will increase the craft’s independence and ability to respond to any external threats such as space debris. Space debris is a real problem for both spacecraft and for us here on Earth. With meteors passing dangerously close that we didn’t even realize were coming, NASA has been looking for a solution to the problem that will protect us from any stray space objects.

In an official blog post, Kocsis said,

“With this project, we will exploit (the power of) Ethereum-based blockchain technology to develop a decentralized, secure, and cognitive networking and computing infrastructure for deep space exploration. The blockchain consensus protocols will be further explored to improve the resilience of the infrastructure.”

According to NASA’s advanced communications program manager Thomas Kacpura at the Glenn Research Center, the application of decentralized technology could lead to “next generation space networks”.The research project could lead to “decentralized processing among NASA’s space network nodes in a secure fashion”, meaning a more responsive and resilient network that’s scalable which can also integrate today’s networks, the NASA official added.

This exemplar piece of news will now show how Blockchain Technology will be applied to novel causes. NASA has shown us one way of exploiting the underlying applications of blockchain technology which still remain dormant.
