NBA Names CryptoKitties Creator as New Partner for Upcoming Basketball Collectibles Game

Blockchain technology has found a new home in the sports sector based on a new announcement from the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA).  According to the news release, the association will be collaborating with the United States National Basketball Association (NBA), as well as Dapper Labs – creators of CryptoKitties – for a new game called NBA Top Shot.

Set to launch early in 2020, NBA Top Shot will be based on crypto collectibles and will allow lovers of basketball to join in the game, collecting, trading and generally being a part of important Basketball history through blockchain technology. Players will be able to enjoy the game by obtaining “live in-game moments from the NBA season.” These acquisitions will be made as collectibles and players will then have the opportunity to use them in competition with other players or just simply own them.

Roham Gharegozlou, the Dapper Labs CEO, has expressed some enthusiasm with the upcoming project to produce an unprecedented type of gaming adventure for fans of the sport. He said:

“Dapper Labs is proud to work with the NBA and NBPA, to create an unparalleled digital experience for sports fans. Through NBA Top Shot, basketball fans can engage with their favourite players, teams, and each other in entirely new ways. We use the latest in blockchain technology to create assets and experiences that are guaranteed limited edition and authentic, not to mention portable and permanent in a way nothing digital has ever been before.”

Blockchain for the Hoops

Last year, it was reported that the Sacramento Kings basketball team is interested in mining Ether (ETH) and would be installing mining machines in the Sacramento Golden 1 Centre. Proceeds are expected to be donated to charity.

The Cleveland Cavaliers also announced a few weeks ago that it had begun an official partnership with UnitedCoin to provide fintech solutions and receive advertising for the team.
