“Satoshi” Has Now Been Officially Added To The Oxford English Dictionary

As part of an official blog post published on Oct.9, the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has now included the word “Satoshi”, to its official database. The post mentions that Satoshi is the most recent word added to the compendium and that it was first used less than seven years ago.

The announcement describes Satoshi as the “smallest monetary unit in the Bitcoin cryptocurrency, and is named after Satoshi Nakamoto, the – probably pseudonymous – developer (s) of Bitcoin”, referring to Bitcoin’s unknown creator(s). The official page for the word however describes Satoshi with a bit more detail. It says:

“The smallest monetary unit in the Bitcoin digital payment system, equal to one hundred millionth of a Bitcoin.”

The OED team has been known to be quite open to adding more words to the lexicon overtime. The recent announcements shows that other words including “chillax”, “whatevs”, as well as “omnishambles”, have been added at various times as well. The word “Bitcoin” itself, was also officially added to the OED back in 2013, and is described as “a digital currency in which transactions can be performed without the need for a central bank.” The OED has a policy regarding the addition of words, that specifically describes its willingness to “monitor and record emerging vocabulary” and add these words officially, as they gain more popularity.
