Three Indian Undergraduates Have Created An Online Voting Platform Powered By Blockchain

Three students from the Malla Reddy Engineering College for Women, a university in India’s Telangana state, have built a blockchain platform that will allow eligible voters cast their votes online. The students built this platform to tackle problems surrounding voting at election time in many areas in the country such as long queues at the polling booths.

According to a report from the Hindu Businessline, an Indian media platform, one of the women involved in the creation of the ‘smart voting system’ further explained that voting records always show that there is much more participation in rural areas than the urban parts of town. This is because the crowds at these centres are usually a little too much and discouraging.

As a result of their creation, the team won first place at Hexathon, a 24-hour hackathon event organized by popular local tech hub, Hexagon Capability Center India (HCCI). One of the women, Shivani, has also spoken on the creation and its effectiveness and utility as it has already been tested. Shivani said:

“Post winning the hackathon, we have been asked to test the solution in gated communities. It is very safe as it is backed by blockchain technology. It is very difficult to break into this.”

The use of blockchain technology for election is an idea that is slowly growing in popularity. Already, Utah County in the U.S., has begun blockchain voting.
