Vodafone Inks New Partnership To Connect Energy Assets Via Blockchain and IoT

Telecommunications behemoth Vodafone has entered a partnership with blockchain company Energy Web (EW) to offer a platform that will integrate renewable and distributed energy assets through blockchain technology and internet-of-things (IoT) connectivity.

According to an official announcement from Energy Web, the partnership will pool SIM-centric blockchain technology with Vodafone Business’ IoT connectivity, to create “secure IDs” for the distributed energy assets.

Speaking on the development, Energy Web CEO Walter Kok says that IoT is very important for the growth and development of the energy sector:

“From our perspective, the energy sector can only evolve so fast and so far without taking into account IoT connectivity. Bringing together EW’s expertise in energy and decentralization with Vodafone Business’ leadership in IoT creates a really powerful combination.”

The announcement specifies that billions of renewable and distributed assets such as heat pumps, batteries, solar panels, and wind turbines, will easily be integrated with energy grids, via the partnership.

The platform will also allow players in the energy grid sector to easily recognize these distributed assets, as soon as they connect with the power grids. This recognition is paramount to maintaining the platform and ensuring that it consistently remains as stable as possible. This part of the partnership will specifically be handled by the Energy Web Decentralized Operating System (EW-DOS) and the Vodafone Business IoT.
