Bitcoin price rise fetched Wikileaks a whooping 50,000% Return

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks has recently expressed his gratitude towards U.S. government via social media after claiming a record “50,000 % return “on investment powered by digital currencies. He recently tweeted a screenshot which contained a price curve following the Bitcoin upsurge starting from 18th July 2010 and ending on 14th October 2017. The Bitcoin priceunderwent a 9,689,900 percent increase during this period starting out at a meagre $0.06 and ending at a whopping $5814. WikiLeaks, a non-profit whistle blower site founded way back in 2006 relies primarily on donations for getting things done.

Assange was particularly thankful to U.S. government as the later coerced companies such as MasterCard and Visa to carry out “an illegal banking blockade” against his establishment. MasterCard imposed a ban on its products in 2010 from being used for paying off WikiLeaks. Paypal also brought about stringent restrictions on WikiLeak’s account after news about the company violating its policy guidelines was made public. Outcast by the banking world, WikiLeaks lost out on ‘tens of millions of pounds in lost donations.’

This was the main driving force behind WikiLeak’s Bitcoin investment. Although the cryptocurrency suffers from tremendous volatility, it can easily be used for fostering anonymous payments across international borders.

WikiLeaks was previously charged with the offence of publishing classified government documents. Assange had to fight a long drawn legal suit along with Swedish prosecutors who brought charges of rape on the founder which he denied vehemently. This investigation was ceased by Swedish officials earlier this year. Assange was granted the plea of being allowed asylum care in the Ecuador embassy housed in London where he has been residing ever since.

The public donation platform of WikiLeaks has received 7.5 bitcoins worth $42,870 presently. Over the six year period starting from the time it showed inclination towards the first decentralized peer-to-peer cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, it has successfully completed more than 26,000 transactions.

Satoshi Nakamoto , the founder of Bitcoin was initially against the idea of Assange’s organisation accepting the cryptocurrency. He expressed his view in Bitcointalk where he was quoted as saying:

“No, don’t “bring it on”. The project needs to grow gradually so the software can be strengthened along the way. I make this appeal to WikiLeaks not to try to use Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a small beta community in its infancy. You would not stand to get more than pocket change, and the heat you would bring would likely destroy us at this stage.

However, Assange’s venture has yielded significant results and WikiLeaks came out with the announcement of accepting contributions from private-oriented Zcash last August. Apart from Bitcoin and Litecoin, Zcash is the third largest currency accepted by WikiLeaks.
